Taylor Townsend wins second Grand Slam doubles title at 2025 Australian Open

Taylor Townsend's brilliance at the biggest events continued at the Australian Open, where she won her second Grand Slam title with Czech partner Katerina Siniakova. The top-seeded duo backed up their Wimbledon crown from last season with another major title in Melbourne, beating third seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Jelena Ostapenko, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3, in Sunday's final.

Since they first teamed up eight months ago, Townsend and Siniakova have also reached the US Open semifinals and the WTA Finals title match. Siniakova strengthened her grip on the WTA's No. 1 doubles ranking with the Australian Open title, while Townsend moved up two places to a new career high of No. 3.

After cruising to the Melbourne semifinals without dropping a set, Townsend and Siniakova won three-setters in each of the final two rounds. They came back from a set down in a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 semifinal victory against Mira Andreeva and Diana Shnaider before fighting off a mid-match surge from Hsieh and Ostapenko in the final.

"I'm happy with the way that we fought mentally and were able to fight through those tough moments and kind of overcome," Townsend said during the pair's championship press conference.

The American is now an eight-time WTA doubles champion, with seven of those titles coming after her return from maternity leave in 2022. She is also a former junior singles champion at the Australian Open.

In a full-circle moment for the junior world No. 1, Sunday's doubles final was Townsend's first match in Rod Laver Arena since she won the Melbourne girls' title in 2012.

"It's amazing that when you go out to these courts, you hold memories, and you remember what those feelings are," the 28-year-old reflected. "Being able to step back on the court and practice there, it kind of brought back those memories and how it felt, the little girl with braces and bows in her hair. It was really special."

Townsend's doubles title capped a trophy-filled fortnight for Americans in Melbourne, with Madison Keys winning her first Grand Slam in women's singles and American juniors claiming four trophies.
