U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team to face Austria in 2023 qualifying round

Victoria Chiesa | November 13, 2022

GLASGOW, Scotland -- The U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team’s next campaign for a record-extending 19th Billie Jean King Cup title will begin next April against Austria.

In the official draw for next year’s Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge competition, held Sunday at Emirates Arena in Glasgow ahead of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals, the fifth-seeded Americans were drawn against Austria for the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers—the first round of play for the 18 countries who are eligible to play for the Billie Jean King Cup next year.

It will be the first meeting between the two countries in Billie Jean King Cup play in 19 years.

For the third straight year, each year since the Billie Jean King Cup transition to a qualifying and single-site Finals format, U.S. was also awarded hosting rights for the qualifying round.

The full draw took place ahead of this year’s final between Australia and Switzerland, both of whom have qualified for the 2023 Finals automatically as a result. The 10 nations that finished in third through 12th place at the 2022 Finals, and the eight winners of the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs that took place this weekend, will play in nine traditional home-and-away ties the weekend of April 14-15, 2023.

The U.S. went 1-1 in the group stage of this year’s Finals in Glasgow, beating Poland but losing to the Czech Republic in a winner-take-all tie that decided a semifinal berth. The team earned its seed as the fifth-highest ranked team (No. 7) among the countries in the draw behind Spain, Czech Republic, France and Canada.

The U.S. is 7-2 all-time against Austria in Billie Jean King Cup play dating back to the first meeting between the two countries in 1977. The Austrians won the last two meetings in 2002 and 2004.

The winning nations in the 2023 Qualifiers will advance to the 2023 Finals, a field which will be rounded out by either the hosts of the 2023 competition (if not already qualified, when the host venue is announced) or the highest-ranked loser of a qualifying tie. The location for U.S. qualifying tie in April will be announced in due course.

The 18 nations competing in next year's Qualifiers were drawn as follows:

Spain vs. Mexico

Czech Republic vs. Ukraine

France vs. Great Britain

Canada vs. Belgium

U.S. vs. Austria

Slovakia vs. Italy

Germany vs. Brazil

Kazakhstan vs. Poland

Romania vs. Slovenia
