U.S. Davis Cup team headed to Glasgow for Finals group stage

Victoria Chiesa | April 26, 2022

The U.S. Davis Cup team's road to another Davis Cup title will wind through Scotland. The U.S. men were drawn into Group D for the round-robin stage of the 2022 Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals, and will head to Glasgow in September to face hosts Great Britain, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in the hopes of advancing on to the kockout rounds.

The U.S. qualified for the Finals by beating Colombia, 4-0, in Reno, Nev. in March, and will look to advance out of the group stage at the event for the first time in its fourth attempt since the new tournament format for Davis Cup debuted in 2019.

The 16 nations that qualified for the Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals were drawn into four groups. The full draw for the group stage is as follows:

Group A - Bologna, Italy: Croatia, Italy, Argentina, Sweden

Group B - Valencia, Spain: Spain, Canada, Serbia, Republic of Korea

Group C - Hamburg, Germany: France, Germany, Belgium, Australia

Group D - Glasgow, Great Britain: USA, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Netherlands

The group stage will be played across the four cities from Sept. 14-18. All-time in Davis Cup, the U.S. boasts an 8-6 record against Great Britain and the Netherlands, having never played Kazakhstan; much of that history is between the U.S. and Great Britain.

Two of the founding nations of Davis Cup, the U.S. and Great Britain have only played twice in the competition since the turn of the millennium, with the Brits winning ties played in 2014 and 2015.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage, which will be played in Malaga, Spain from Nov. 21-27. Winners of the first-ever Davis Cup in 1900, the U.S. is bidding for a record-extending 33rd title in the storied competition, and first since 2007.
