Vandeweghe, Sock Defeat Russia In Hopman Cup

McCarton Ackerman | December 30, 2017

It’s still 2017, but CoCo Vandeweghe and Jack Sock kicked off their 2018 season in style by defeating Russia 2-1 on opening day at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia.

Competing in her first match as a Top 10 player, World No. 10 Vandeweghe opened up play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. World No. 8 then Sock clinched the tie by defeating Khachanov 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The Russians prevailed in a mixed doubles match using the abbreviated “Fast 4” scoring system 3-4(5), 4-1, 4-2.

“I’d like to take one more trophy at the start of the year,” said Vandeweghe. “I hope Jack feels the same.”

The Americans, slotted in Group B in the round-robin competiton, will next face the Japanese duo of Yuichi Sugita and Naomi Osaka before taking on the Swiss pair of Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic. They will look to do one better than their runner-up finish last year, where they narrowly fell to France 2-1.
