Battle Fever Over The Hudson

In 2012, USTA Eastern held the first Battle of the Boroughs in our Metro Region as a way for adults to represent their neighborhood pride in this spirited recreational tennis tournament. Six years later, the Battle crossed over the state line with the first Battle of the Parks in New Jersey.

This year, the Battle has grown even stronger, offering boundless fun and antagonizing competition. The Battle Series concluded with a city and section-wide championship on July 25 at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, N.Y. There were two levels of competition based on NTRP rating: 4.0 or higher competed in Flight A and players with a rating of 4.0 or lower played in Flight B. New Jersey came out, rackets-a-blazing, but in the end, Team Queens protected their home court like Revolutionary War fortress and took first place in Flight A. ADVERTISEMENT Team Brooklyn  prevailed victorious in Flight B.

The July 25 Battle Championship summoned great representation from most of the Eastern regions. Some rogue Long Islanders joined several Borough teams to compete with their friends, and soldiers from our Southern Region also joined the fight and now look forward to making a team from Westchester County next year! We even had Tennis On Campus representation from Cornell University. There is nothing better than competing with friends and making new ones.  Tennis is strong in our public parks and we are excited to have the Battle Championships continue to grow! Next year, maybe there will be World War Tennis!
