Inside Florida Tennis: Gauff and Shelton Lead Talented Lineup of Florida Players at Miami Open

Last year, Danielle Collins was able to reach the quarterfinals, before falling short to Japan’s Naomi Osaka. Coco Gauff made it to the fourth round, where she fell to eventual champion, Iga Swiatek (Poland). Both women are looking to avenge their runs from 2022 and have great chances to make a deep run in Miami.

Amanda Anisimova, Sloane Stephens, and Sofia Kenin also are looking to make Florida proud. Anisimova is trying to hit her top form again after suffering a broken toe late into the 2022 season. Stephens is in her 11th season competing at the pro level and has already won a Miami Open Championship under her belt from 2018. Kenin returned to the court at the 2023 Australian Open after missing over four months last year with an ankle injury. She won her opening match in straight sets.  

Finally, Nicole Melichar-Martinez is participating in the Doubles draw, where her and her Aussie duo, Ellen Perez are expected to put on a show for the Miami crowd as they enter as the eight seed.

Over on the Men’s side of the draw, Ben Shelton is already off to a hot start in 2023 and will take on the Miami Open Field. Shelton reached the quarterfinals in his first-ever Australian Open appearance and can have a similar or better result in Miami. 

Austin Krajicek is playing in the Doubles bracket and last year he had tough loss in the second-round last year. In Miami this year, he will be playing with France’s Nicolas Mahut in hopes of lifting the trophy.

The Miami Open Qualifying started on March 19 and the Main Draw competition will run through April 2. Keep tabs on all the Florida players and their performances at the Miami Open by following USTA Florida social media accounts.
