University of Florida & University of Miami Lock in Spots at Tennis on Campus Nationals

Jaret Kappelman | February 26, 2024

USTA Florida welcomed college tennis clubs from across the state as the Tennis on Campus Sectional Championship was held, with bids for Nationals on the line. The USTA National Campus hosted 8 unique schools, with 20 teams, and 153 student-athletes.

A lot was on the line as only the top two finishers from the event would earn a spot at the National Championships. To decide a winner, the teams were broken into five groups, where each played in a round robin. The final group standings were used to determine the bracket for the Sectional crown.

The competition was fierce all weekend long with the teams battling it out for their shot at the Sectional Championship. Two teams really stood out as they met in the championship, The University of Florida and The University of Miami. Both schools were nearly flawless all weekend long taking competitive matches left and right.

In the championship, the teams left everything that they had on the courts. With the teams taking games off one another, it was a great match to watch. Ultimately, the University of Florida came out victorious and earned the state’s top seed at Nationals.

This event marked USTA Florida’s first time using the new and improved Virtual Tournament Desk System, the Match Tennis Team app. With Match Tennis Team, USTA Florida can better communicate match times, scores, delays, and tournament updates from a central spot. Teams also submitted lineups and scores through the app, therefore streamlining and keeping the entire event running seamlessly.

Match Tennis Team also allows family, friends, and others to easily follow along with tournaments and stay updated on all the matches, in real-time. The organization will be utilizing this throughout 2024 and on, with Junior Team Tennis using it at the Spring State Championship.

The 2024 Tennis on Campus Sectional Championship marked the end of the season. USTA Florida’s top finishers, UF and UM will play in the National Championship, in Rome, Georgia on April 4.
