Mid-Atlantic

They Goin’ to the Ship!

October 03, 2022

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… Can you guess what time that is? USTA League National Championships of course! Teams from all 17 sections are getting ready to hit the road for weekends full of tennis competition, memories, and FUN.

In the Mid-Atlantic, the road to USTA League Nationals was nothing short of exciting. Teams played their way through local leagues, Regional Championships, and Sectional Championships with the goal of winning an opportunity to represent USTA Mid-Atlantic Section in national tennis events in Arizona, Florida and Oklahoma. Ultimately, 36 teams from around the Mid-Atlantic region advanced to the National League Championships.

Although the excitement is definitely in the air, the road to Nationals is not a quick journey. Teams spend numerous hours each week preparing and practicing to get ready for the competition ahead. Each team has their own philosophy on what they believe will make them successful. Team Captain and player Chirs Hester of Richmond, Va., said his team has spent extended periods of time with one another off court which in turn has translated into a close knit team and on-court success. “These relationships are beyond tennis, but absolutely serve us well on the tennis court and foster an authentic team spirit,” said Hester.

Co-Captain Lucy Wang of Prince George's County, Md., describes her team's road to Nationals as “a journey of progress and commitment.” For Lucy and the Captain of her team, Christopher Grant, this moment is surreal. As a couple, Lucy and Christopher picked up tennis during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, they are soaking up every second knowing that their team that they have captained is going to Nationals. “We’ve each challenged ourselves in different ways, while reaching for our own goals through tournament play,” said Wang. “And now, Nationals is the next big one for all of us!”

Congratulations to all USTA Mid-Atlantic League participants, Captains, League Ambassadors and all involved  for a season well played.

Now, let’s join together and show our Mid-Atlantic spirit to celebrate the teams that advanced to the 2022 USTA League National Championships. Best of luck and we will be cheering every team and player on! We are #MidAtlanticProud.
