Cori “Coco” Gauff’s standout Wimbledon run rocked the tennis world this past summer when she became the youngest player to compete in a Grand Slam since 1991.
It turns out, Gauff has a strong connection to Philadelphia and USTA Middle States.
In April of this year, Courtney Scott, a graduate of the University of Delaware men’s tennis team and a former coach at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education, joined Gauff’s team as her hitting partner. He knew immediately that she had all the intangibles to succeed at the highest level.
“The first time I watched her in person, I knew she was going to be ready for the big stage,” said Scott, who also coached at Drexel University and plays numerous USTA Adult Tournaments.
What did he notice most?
“Her game to her composure, and of course her world-class athleticism,” he added.
Scott is in New York this week with the rest of Gauff's team, prepping for a Tuesday match.

It's been an experience he won't soon forget — and also an experience he expects to last quite some time.
“We have a great team supporting Coco, with a growth mindset to continuously improve, and have fun trusting the process,” Scott said. “This is just the beginning. The best is yet to come.”
