2026 Coach Inclusion Summit

July 09, 2026

In Kansas City, Mo., the USTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team partnered with USTA Coaching to host the Coach Inclusion Summit powered by USTA Coaching. Centered on the principles of inclusion and belonging, the summit was designed to support the growth and development of diverse tennis coaches by equipping them with the tools and resources needed to succeed and help their players thrive. With engaging speakers, a full day of on-court learning and valuable networking opportunities, attendees left with new skills, fresh insights and meaningful connections to support the continued growth of their careers. Below is a first-person essay by Mikaela Black, the recreation tennis manager for Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, who represented the Midwest Section at the summit and shares her favorite moments.

Attending the Coach Inclusion Summit was an incredible experience that I am grateful to have been a part of. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed into a community of coaches who were passionate about growing the game of tennis and creating more inclusive opportunities for players of all backgrounds.

One of the highlights of the summit was the opportunity to meet and connect with coaches from across the country. I truly enjoyed making new friends and learning about the different paths that brought each person to coaching. The diversity of coaches in attendance was inspiring. There were coaches representing country clubs, National Junior Tennis and Learning chapters, Community Tennis Associations, schools, private facilities and many other areas of the tennis industry. As someone who works in recreation and parks, our programming model is often different from many of these environments. So it was valuable to hear how others approach challenges, engage participants and build successful programs.

The speaker lineup was outstanding. I appreciated not only the expertise each presenter brought, but also how interactive and engaging every session was. The speakers encouraged discussion, collaboration and reflection, which made the learning experience much more impactful. Rather than simply listening to presentations, we were actively involved in conversations that challenged us to think differently about leadership, inclusion and coaching.

I especially enjoyed the Women in Coaching panel. Hearing the personal stories, challenges and successes of the panelists was both motivating and empowering. Their experiences reinforced the importance of representation and mentorship within our profession and highlighted the positive impact that diverse leadership can have on the next generation of coaches.

Tennis offers so much more than playing or teaching lessons, and exposure to those pathways can make a tremendous difference for young people entering the sport.

The summit will have a lasting impact on my coaching and programming efforts. It reinforced the importance of creating welcoming environments where every participant feels valued and has the opportunity to succeed. I left with new ideas, new connections and a renewed sense of purpose.

As I continue my work in recreation and parks, I look forward to applying what I learned to expand access to tennis, strengthen community engagement and create meaningful experiences for players of all ages and backgrounds.

Overall, the Coach Inclusion Summit was an inspiring and educational experience that reminded me of the power of connection, collaboration and inclusion in growing the game of tennis.
