Inspiring the next generation at the IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals
On Saturday, June 7, USTA Central Indiana hosted a Kids Day at North Central High School's Barbara Wynne Tennis Center in between matches at the IHSAA Girls Tennis State Finals; something that is quickly becoming a tradition. A day for young tennis enthusiasts to not only experience the joy of tennis but also witness some of the state's top high school players compete on its biggest stage.
The Jasper High School girls' tennis team reigned supreme at the state finals, where they defeated Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory 4-1.
It was a glorious victory and celebration as the team captured its first state championship in program history! Although this was not Jasper's first time in the state finals, after falling short three times previously, the team was ecstatic to finally break through with a big win over No. 1-ranked and undefeated Brebeuf.
Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory claimed only one win at No. 3 singles, where Maureen Tancredi beat Lila Hawkes, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. Jasper High School secured the trophy with wins by Harper Wigand at No. 1 singles, Marian Haynes at No. 2 singles, Reese Mundy and Adaysha Smiley at No. 1 doubles and Kiersten Sternberg and Kate Yarbrough at No. 2 doubles.
The team rode home with their victory and paraded through town at a ceremony held in their honor. The win was especially meaningful to Coach Scott Yarbrough whose father had led the boys' team to the tennis state finals and won in 1999. He promised his father he would bring home a girl's title, and he did.
The USTA Kids Day attendees got to see where hard work can take you and the importance of teamwork, key lessons on the court and in life. USTA Central Indiana will be back at the IHSAA Boys Tennis State Finals for another Kids Day this fall!
