Through the rain, eight teams eventually emerged to reign as champions this past weekend.

 

In a soggy setting for the 40 & Over League Section Championships in Kansas City and Springfield, eight teams punched their tickets to League National Championships. Over 400 matches were played over the weekend.

 

The champions and the home district are as follows:

 

3.0 Women: Oklahoma (Stephanie Goekeler)

3.0 Men: Oklahoma (Ky Nichols)

3.5 Women: Heart of America (Laura Irvin)

3.5 Men: Oklahoma (Shane Tuell)

4.0 Women: Heart of America (Theresa Montgomery)

4.0 Men: Iowa (Rich Heil)

4.5 Women: Iowa (Sara Loetscher)

4.5 Men: Oklahoma (Stan Swyden)

 

Winning teams from this weekend’s event will receive the title of USTA Missouri Valley Section Champions and advance to the USTA League Tennis Championships at locations varying from Las Vegas to Orlando. This year, League Tennis Championships will have a colorful aspect as each section has been assigned a color to represent them at the events. ADVERTISEMENT This year, USTA Missouri Valley will be represented by pink.

 

The teams this weekend, which represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, finished at the top of their local leagues and the winning teams will represent the USTA Missouri Valley at the USTA League National Championships. Over 600 players participated in the event over the weekend.

 

USTA League Tennis is a competitive, team-based match play format designed for all players 18 and older and of all skill level. Teams are generally made up of approximately eight players, depending on the division played and all matches are played against those of a similar skill level.

 

Five more League Section Championships are scheduled over the next few months. The action returns to Kansas City and Springfield on Sept 6-8.. League Section Championships will also be hosted in Omaha and Tulsa.
