Bright family brings new life to former Metro East Tennis Center

Sydney Hamilton | February 15, 2024

February is Black History Month, and USTA Heart of America is honored to highlight players, organizations, and facilities in our district who have done so much to help grow the game of tennis in the communities we serve. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on the Bright family, who recently purchased what was once Metro East Tennis Center in eastern Jackson County, MO, before transforming it into the new MatchpointKC facility.

“Our goal was to bring tennis at a high level to eastern Jackson County,” said Christi Bright. “We wanted to keep it intimate but bring a high level of play to the community.”

Christi, who played tennis in high school growing up in Southern California, loves being able to share the experience of owning and operating MatchpointKC with her 22-year-old twin sons, Michael and Gabriel. Michael is director of operations at the facility, and Gabriel is the director of marketing and member relations. Youngest son Christopher is a rising star in the junior tennis world; when I spoke with the family, he was traveling for a tournament.

“I was the member of the family that played tennis, then my son got involved,” Christi said, proudly. “Christopher plays tournaments throughout the country and wants to go pro.”

Gabriel is extremely proud of the facility he helps run with his brother. You can hear the enthusiasm in his voice when he speaks about it and the programming offered to its members. “Personally, I just enjoy being able to interact with our members on a positive level and enjoy allowing people the opportunity to play tennis in our community,” Gabriel said. “It brightens my day to see the children getting a chance to play.”

MatchpointKC offers a variety of programs for both juniors and adults, beginners and advanced players alike. “Currently, we have classes for adults and children, and we’ll continue to add classes to help serve the community through the summer,” Gabriel said. “We definitely have plans to keep doing that.”

The facility also hosts USTA tournaments, as well as leagues and challenge ladders for adults. “We also allow people the opportunity to host their own tournaments and leagues,” said Gabriel.

The facility was only purchased by the family in November 2023, but has seen growth in programming since then. Among the difficulties of a new purchase such as this is getting the word out. “We want people to know MatchpointKC exists. It was formerly Metro East but it wasn’t well known in the area, and people were driving to Lee’s Summit to play tennis,” Gabriel said. “We’re working to get [the facility] organized and get it up and running, while serving existing and future guests that come in.”

The draw for the facility is there. MatchpointKC has five indoor courts–two of those Deco Turf and three Nova ProBounce–all of which are climate controlled. It also has several other amenities, including locker rooms with showers, a juice bar, and more. And Gabriel is eager for the community to experience this updated facility.

“Come check us out, come join in on some classes,” Gabriel said. “We have great coaches and members who love to play tennis. We offer classes, serve drinks and snacks, and there are opportunities for private coaching. It’s all easy to schedule. It’s been a really good system.”

“We are very grateful and honored [individuals] come in our direction.”
