New Junior Coordinator Elizabeth Deerinwater ready to create more positive programming for KC
USTA Heart of America is excited to announce Elizabeth Deerinwater has been hired as the new junior programming coordinator. Deerinwater, who attended primary school in Kansas City, comes to USTA Heart of America from Polo Tennis Club in Austin, Texas, where she served as a tennis pro for more than 10 years.
“I’m thrilled to be back in my favorite city,” Deerinwater said.
An active member of the USTA, Deerinwater has served on the board of the Capital Area Tennis Association, the Junior Development Committee, the USTA National Junior Team Tennis Committee and the USTA Texas Junior Team Tennis Committee. She also serves as a small grants committee member for the Andy Roddick Foundation and was a Yonex captain for the past four years.
Deerinwater has an extensive background in tennis that started when she was in middle school.
“I started learning to play tennis in middle school, went on to play in high school and college,” she said. “I’ve played competitively as an adult as well as captaining multiple teams over the years. I’m hoping to get back into playing now that I’m not on court all the time. Is anyone looking for a doubles player for their team in KC?”
In addition to her time spent on the court, Deerinwater has been involved in a wide variety of programs and initiatives off the court.
“I have previously been the volunteer coordinator and bug operation for the Austin Aces World TeamTennis team, coordinating with ESPN, officials and players to ensure home matches ran smoothly,” Deerinwater said. “I was also a volunteer coordinator for multiple PowerShares QQQ Cup (formerly Champions Series) events and assisted with everything from VIP experiences to helping set up the court at the venues.”
Deerinwater’s return to Kansas City is filled with excitement, and she can’t wait to make a positive impact on USTA Heart of America junior players.
“Every coach knows that tennis can be lifechanging for anyone who picks up a racquet, regardless of age,” she said. “I’m most excited to be part of helping grow this game. It’s an honor to be part of any athlete's journey of discovery in tennis—no matter how small the part you play—and it’s a privilege I don’t take lightly.”
As any new employee knows, it takes some time to get acclimated to the new surroundings. Deerinwater has spent time building important relationships with coaches and clubs, is immersed in learning what local programming currently exists and is thinking of ways to connect with area families.
“Right now, I’m learning the landscape. USTA Heart of America is different from USTA Texas in a lot of ways," Deerinwater said. “Until I understand the opportunities to help coaches and clubs, I’m here to listen, learn and support. Once I have my footing, I hope to help more with community outreach and play days while supporting coaches, clubs and families to the best of my ability.”
The impact junior programming and Junior Team Tennis (JTT) has on youth just starting out on the court can last a lifetime, and the positive environment fostered by coordinators like Deerinwater helps children learn and grow in many facets of life.
“I love junior tennis, JTT and the opportunities it provides to littles to compete in a situation where individual wins and losses are not the focus,” Deerinwater said. “The team environment provides such a creative atmosphere for growth for our athletes. Team tournaments, play days, grownup/kiddo red ball tournaments—there are so many creative ways to get the entire family involved in tennis. Eventually, I hope to play a part in that.
“I believe that talent is universal, but opportunity isn’t. Sharing this sport with adults and littles is an honor, and not one I take lightly. I have seen and heard that same sentiment and passion from coaches here in Heart of America, and I’m excited to be part of it.”
Deerinwater is looking forward to being part of the thriving Kansas City tennis community, and USTA Heart of America is thrilled to have her joining the team.
“(USTA) Missouri Valley is the best and Heart of America has some of the best coaches and a history of developing top tennis players,” Deerinwater said. “I’m thrilled to be part of the tennis community here.”
