Plaza Tennis Center home to teams from local high schools, colleges
Greater Kansas City is home to several colleges and universities, many of which offer tennis to their students. Plaza Tennis Center has long been the home facility for the Rockhurst University men’s and women’s tennis teams as well as the University of Missouri-Kansas City women’s tennis team.
Now, these schools—and two local high schools, Rockhurst High School and St. Teresa’s Academy—have an upgraded facility they can be proud of.
All courts at the Plaza Tennis Center have been resurfaced and several necessary upgrades have been made. As a result, it’s time for players at these schools to bring in the new school year with competition and camaraderie.
St. Teresa’s girls’ tennis season kicked off Sept. 3, and the team has home-court matches throughout the month and a tournament that takes place Sept. 17. The tournament will welcome schools from both Missouri and Kansas.
The collegiate tennis season brings even more excitement to the courts of the tennis center, with Rockhurst University hosting a college invitational on Sept. 6-8. Men’s and women’s teams from Washburn University (Kan.), the University of Nebraska-Kearney and McHendry County College (Ill.) will participate in the tournament.
In between practices and matches for these local schools, Plaza Tennis Center is bringing back tennis programming that’s open to the community.
“We’re slowly bringing in drills and things like that so we can accommodate those who walk in,” said Mary Buschmann, USTA Missouri Valley CEO and executive director. “You can book courts online to see what’s available.”

USTA Heart of America would like to wish all our local tennis teams good luck as they begin the new school year.
