Play tennis, donate to medical research with Groundstrokes for Strokes

Andrea Gallagher | September 05, 2024

Once again, tennis enthusiasts in the Iowa City area are able to play tennis and donate to a good cause at the same time.

The annual Groundstrokes for Strokes fundraiser is Sept. 27-29 at various locations in Iowa City, North Liberty and Coralville. This year has a new twist and is also adding pickleball to the itinerary.

“Throughout the weekend we will offer a variety of classes that will cover the fundamentals of tennis and pickleball for people just beginning to play, while also providing drills for those at higher levels,” said Chirayu Shukla, Groundstrokes for Strokes organizer.

The event schedule includes a variety of drills such as intro to forehands, backhands, serving, volleying and then playing games. Groundstrokes for Strokes was started by medical, dental and physical therapy students at the University of Iowa to raise money for stroke awareness and research at the university hospitals.

This event raises money for the Stoppelmoor Adams Stroke Education and Research fund, which is used to fund pilot research on strokes as well as bringing in and retaining the best stroke research clinicians.
