Happy Holidays USTA Iowa!
Happy holidays from USTA Iowa. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone within USTA Iowa a safe and wonderful holiday season.
Many exciting things are happening in Iowa tennis that we can celebrate and be thankful for.
2023 brought some exciting updates in regards to the progress of our strategic plan. We nearly doubled the amount of participation and grants given to organizations through the section and district in year two. $58,369.80 was given to support the communities and organizations that are building up our sports from grass roots up. We are breaking barriers and unifying the amazing efforts of volunteers all around Iowa through parks and recreation, clubs, CTAs, and schools. In our mission to get tennis, and all of the benefits that it brings, to our Iowan communities, the increase in grant applications represents the active contributions of amazing community leaders that love the sport and are building programs within our state. What a success! Our providers certainly are special. One of our providers Lifetime Fitness received a USTA Facility Award, one of 29 in the nation. Speaking of providers, a special thank you to all our volunteers, officials, and parents that have sacrificed their time for the good of others. We are truly building something special.
Competitive tennis in Iowa has been something to be especially proud of this year as players in many capacities have been particularly competitive on a variety of stages locally and nationally. Our league teams, Tennis On Campus Teams, youth players, and adult players have demonstrated that Iowa nice can also be very competitive. Many of our Iowan players have come up through our grassroot programs and are now representing us strongly on some of the biggest stages. Three of our USTA Adult League teams have qualified for National level competitions, The University of Iowa Tennis On Campus team qualified for the Tennis On Campus National Tournament held at the National Campus in Orlando. Iowa State University placed 2nd at this year’s Tennis On Campus Fall invite. Nathan Williams and his mother Teresa Williams won the USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Qualifier in Lincoln Nebraska and earned a spot to play in Orlando and represent the section in the USTA National Adaptive Championship; furthermore, at Nationals, they placed first in their division. Our State also was represented at the US Open by Nick Patrick as he was invited to play doubles at the US OPEN juniors. On behalf of the Iowa district thank you to all of our players for the sportsmanship and competitive spirit that fuels our game.
A quick fun fact about tennis: tennis players add 9.7 years to their life over sedentary individuals. That is almost 10 more extra holidays with the special people in our lives. Nothing about USTA Iowa is sedentary, and as we are going places I am excited and honored to be on this journey with you. Enjoy this holiday season, spend some time with family and friends, maybe even spend an impromptu afternoon on the courts; however you choose to spend it, know that I am thankful for all that you do to make Iowa tennis special.
A very happy holiday from USTA Iowa.
