July & August Junior Tournaments Canceled
The USTA Missouri Valley Junior Competition Committee (JCC) has made the difficult decision to cancel the July 25-27 L4 USTA MV #3 and August 1-3 L3 USTA MV #1. Although the section JCC hoped to host these tournaments in 2020, the concerns regarding the health, safety, and well-being of the players and spectators due to COVID-19 were brought to the forefront.
While tennis remains one of the healthiest activities, the USTA Missouri Valley is aware that players from the seven districts are dealing with different elements that may impact one’s ability to travel or provide unintended advantages of residing in the various districts. The section is fully aware that the tournament directors and facilities that were planning on hosting the July 25-27 level 4 and August 1-3 level 3 tournaments were more than capable of running these events safely.
Since play resumed on June 1, the section has been encouraged by participation and the focus on safety at district tournaments. In the best interest of the players, the JCC does not want to jeopardize competition at the local levels by playing an event hastily. USTA Missouri Valley will continue to support junior competition at the local level by encouraging players to strengthen district events before preparing to commence section events in September.
The section office and JCC will continue to evaluate the obstacles surrounding COVID-19. USTA Missouri Valley intends on playing the September 5-7 L4 USTA MV #4. If there are any changes to the status of this tournament, an announcement will be made by August 18th.
