Sportsmanship Winners Shine at State Tourney

Kendra Wicks | May 14, 2019

Harris Kossover, Colby Klotz and Charlie Foss are exceptional high school tennis players who received 2018 Kansas Junior Sportsmanship Awards in October. The trio recently played in the state tournament.

The tournament was hosted by Topeka West High School at Kossover Tennis Center on May 10 and 11. Players from 21 different high schools competed with Salina Central taking first as a team. Pietro Perego of Topeka Seaman took first place in singles, while Hayden Brauer and Colby Swift of Valley Center won the doubles title.

Klotz and his partner won their first-round match for Arc City High School before falling to Valley Center. Kossover came in with a 18-9 record from Maize South High School and lost his first two matches. Foss represented Kapaun Mount Carmel High School and won his first-round match before losing out to an opponent from St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

USTA Sportsmanship Awards are received by five players in the girls and boys junior classifications each year. They recognize players who have actively participated in USTA tournaments and events and shown positive attitudes and achievements. Kossover, Klotz and Foss have all competed in Junior Team Tennis and other tournaments throughout their careers.
