Tennis Under the Stars: A Perfect Summer Sendoff

It never ceases to amaze us how many pros and programs in our district use their creativity to grow their local tennis communities. One such program at MacAdvantage Tennis Club in McPherson, KS, is its annual end-of-summer event, “Tennis Under the Stars.” 

Each year, the outdoor courts at MacAdvantage Tennis Club light up with blacklights for night-time tennis unlike you’ve ever experienced. Attendees to this family-friendly event are encouraged to wear neon-colored clothing that glows under the blacklights as they participate in games and drills with special tennis balls that glow in the dark. In between all the tennis fun, participants have the opportunity to chow down on hot dogs, pizza, desserts, and more as they dance to upbeat music or sing karaoke with friends. Prizes and swag are also handed out throughout the event.

This year’s Tennis Under the Stars event took place on August 12, and welcomed 105 attendees. Six courts were lit up for all the tennis fun, and participants had an absolute blast, making new memories–and new friends–along the way. While the event usually runs until 3 a.m. for older attendees, this year’s was cut a bit short due to that unpredictable Kansas weather we get this time of year. Regardless, everyone had an incredible time and are looking forward to next year’s event.

While it’s always a great time, it’s important to note that Tennis Under the Stars is more than just a fun night of tennis. It’s also a fundraiser for youth tennis programming in the McPherson area. This volunteer-run event led by MacAdvantage Tennis Club Director Janie Breymer and club staff takes months of planning and preparation, and each year is bigger and better than the last. USTA Kansas is sincerely thankful to Janie, her staff, and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make Tennis Under the Stars fun for all.
