Mixed-League Offerings Part of Historic 2023 USTA Missouri District League Slate
With Columbia’s formation of adult mixed teams at the 40 & over level, USTA Missouri will feature a district playoff and the opportunity for advancement to the USTA Missouri Valley League Section Championships for the first time in the 7.0 and 8.0 divisions.
The historic district matchups will take place August 12-13. The 55 & over mixed league districts, which ran for the first time a year ago, will occur October 8. To read a previously published article highlighting USTA Missouri’s ongoing expansion of mixed leagues, click here.
“We’re really excited, and we’re looking forward to a great districts playoff,” said Leslie Echols, USTA Missouri executive director. “We’ve got teams in both Springfield and Columbia, which is so exciting.”
Springfield features mixed teams at the 7.0 and 8.0 levels for both 18 & Over and 40 & Over, while Columbia has 40+ 7.0 and 8.0 mixed teams. Echols credited Stephanie Farid, Columbia local league coordinator, for her work in getting the Columbia-based mixed teams up and running.
“She has done a phenomenal job recruiting players, building teams and finding captains,” Echols said. “All of this growth is really attributable to her. In addition to opportunities for play in Columbia, it’s so good for the district as a whole. Because it means that extra level of competition Springfield players have to go through before they can get to sectionals. Whichever teams end up going to sectionals, they will be that much more prepared.”
Some teams in USTA Missouri have already been crowned district championships and will progress to the USTA Missouri Valley League Section Championships. At the 40 & Over 4.0 women’s level, Huong Doan’s team captured the district title to move on to sectionals in Tulsa on August 25-27. At the 40 & Over 3.5 women’s level, Debbie Pell’s squad won districts to advance to section championships in Topeka on August 25-27.
At the 18 & Over level, Josh Bartram’s 3.5 men’s team progressed to section championship action occurring in Oklahoma City on August 18-20. At 18+ 4.0, Katie Clouse’s women’s squad will make the trek to St. Louis for section championships on August 4-6. And at the 55+ 7.0 level, Lori Young’s women’s team won its district to move on to section championships in St. Louis on August 4-6.
