MSHSAA Boys’ Tennis State Championships Roundup
Cooper Tennis Complex once again hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Boys’ Tennis State Championships in May, which followed the Girls’ State Championships that occurred during the fall.
Boys’ teams and individuals from across the state descended upon Springfield to vie for state titles in MSHSAA’s three classes. Check out USTA Missouri’s roundup of the prep competition below!
Class 3
In team action for the largest classification, Rock Bridge (Columbia) and Joplin both advanced to the quarterfinals before bowing out. Pembroke Hill defeated John Burroughs 5-0 to capture the state title.
In individual singles play for Class 3, Connor Kitchin (Ozark), Rohan Puri (Rock Bridge), Brandon Rodgers-Stemmle (Rock Bridge) and Hart Hillman (Kickapoo) each made it to the Round of 16. Rockhurst’s Robert King won the championship without conceding a set.
In doubles action, Jonathan Chou/Caleb Kim (Kickapoo) made a run to the state semifinals. Brandon Gu/Aneesh Calyam (Rock Bridge), Ben Converse/Taylor Schlag (Joplin) and Ethan Fisher/Conor McGruder (Lebanon) fell in the Round of 16. Pembroke Hill’s Christopher Thornberry and Andrew Greaves won the title.
Class 2
Branson High School made a strong run to the state semifinals in Class 2 team action. Notre Dame Regional, Capital City and Warrensburg progressed to the quarterfinal stage. MICDS coasted to the team championship.
In singles play, both Benjamin Merrifield (Branson) and Joshua Kim (Central) reached the semifinals. Seth Miller (Willard) got to the quarterfinals. Coen Loethen (Helias Catholic), Michael Bogdanovich (Notre Dame Regional), Prithvi Nagarajan (Thomas Jefferson Independent Day) and Arjun Garikapaty (Jefferson City) reached the Round of 16. Priory’s John Varley snagged the title.
In Class 2 doubles competition, Capital City’s Ethan McNutt/Isaiah Schnoebelen as well as Notre Dame Regional’s Charlie West/Thomas Southard progressed to the quarterfinals.
Matthew Austin/Blake Schreckenberg (Notre Dame Regional), Quinn Conley/Oliver Staab (Warrensburg) and Jack Barnes/Zane Hancock (Glendale) qualified for the Round of 16. As did Cameron Cooper/Owen Kuchar (Rolla), Cole Brodeur/Ronald Wegrzyn (Central) and Devan Murali/Chengle Qian (Thomas Jefferson Independent Day). Ladue’s Aiden Qian and Charles Randall won the doubles title.
Class 1
The Class 1 team tournament featured Bolivar High School making a charge to the championship before falling to Clayton. Fr. Tolton Catholic and Maryville made it to the semis. Moberly and Forsyth advanced to the quarterfinals. Osage, Logan-Rogersville, Monett, Lafayette County and Trenton lost in sectionals.
In individual singles action, Camryn McBride (Lafayette County), Brady Farnan (Fr. Tolton Catholic) and Brendan McKeown (Mexico) advanced to the quarterfinal round. Monett’s Elijah Ridenour, Kirksville’s Gavin Pike, New Covenant Academy’s Jackson O’Dell, Nevada’s Cody Leung, Marshall’s Erlan Jones and Forsyth’s Drue Coen qualified for the Round of 16. Cole Horton of Savannah grabbed the title.
In the Class 1 doubles draw Ryan and Harry O’Loughlin lost a tight three-set match to Clayton’s Joe Major and Ruben Haroutounian, the eventual state champions. Bolivar’s Cy Douglas and Seth Martin also reached the semifinal stage. Kason Teale/Jaxson Staples (Maryville), Damon Alan Lemke/Steven Buckner (Osage), Matthew Jagger/Luke Knollmeyer (Fr. Tolton Catholic) and Charles Campbell/Benjamin Tull (Bolivar) progressed to the quarterfinals.
Other state doubles qualifiers included Jacob Swain and Joseph Whorley (Fr. Tolton Catholic), Willis Bearden and Griffin Coen (Forsyth), Colby Dickmeier and Cesar Rosado Escalante (Lafayette County), Lawson Blocker and Cooper Worley (Dexter), as well as Conner Stewart and Mitch Murray (Logan-Rogersville).
