From Beginner to Competitor: Doreen Sheen heads to National Senior Games
The National Senior Games begin later this month in Des Moines, Iowa. Doreen Sheen, 54, of Kearney, Nebraska, took up tennis only eight years ago and will be competing in her first-ever National Senior Games this year. She said a group of veteran tennis players took her in and taught her everything she knows.
“I love just how active they all are and how much fun we have together,” Sheen said. “We have lots of laughter but also share a bond sharing our life events, good and bad. If we ever need something, we are all ready to step in for each other. It doesn’t matter the age, we just enjoy the game and social time.”
In order to qualify for the National Senior Games, Sheen competed in the Nebraska Senior Games and enjoyed playing different people than she normally plays against. She is looking forward to the experience of competing in Des Moines.
“I am looking forward to meeting players from all over the U.S. and learning from their experience,” she said. “I also grew up in Iowa and have family in Des Moines, so thought this was a perfect opportunity. I am a people person and love connecting no matter where I travel.”
Sheen will be playing women’s doubles, age group 50-54, and also pickleball mixed doubles, 50-54. She tries to get on the court four to six times a week and is always happier when she does.
“I am a better person being around other active individuals and love that we are all from different backgrounds and age groups,” Sheen said. “It doesn’t seem to matter on the court—we have become one big family.”
The National Senior Games take place July 24 to Aug. 4. The tennis portion will take place in numerous locations: Northwest High School in Waukee, Drake University in Des Moines and Lifetime Fitness in Urbandale.
