Elkhorn Dominates in Class A and Class B State Tournaments

Andrea Gallagher | June 01, 2023

Over at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha, Elkhorn South claimed the Class A team trophy, as well as the #2 singles and #2 doubles titles. This wraps up coach Steve Bischof’s 50th season of high school tennis and 400th career win. When he got the chance to come back to Elkhorn South three years ago, he didn’t hesitate to apply.

“When I came back to coach at Elkhorn South, I was asked why I wanted to keep coaching,” he said. “My goal is to help students become better tennis players and better people. We get experienced tennis players and also beginners. As a no-cut team, we keep everyone who tries out. We had 46 girls on varsity, junior varsity and two reserve teams. Tennis is a lifelong sport and we want to encourage kids to play.”

Millard North came in second place and LIncoln East came in third. Omaha Westside’s Grace Greenwald beat Marian’s Cecelia Regan for the #1 singles title.

Over in Lincoln at the Woods Tennis Center, Elkhorn North won the state title for the second year in a row. In addition, they almost swept, winning #2 singles, and #1 and #2 doubles. Coach Lance Kush said the girls work very hard in order to be successful and this year it paid off.

“These girls have great character,” Kush said. “They show good sportsmanship and treat people with respect. They totally deserve everything that they have accomplished!”

Duchesne’s Ina Satpathy won the trophy for #1 singles, beating Bennington’s Kailee Bailey 6-2, 6-0. Satpathy went undefeated the entire season. Meanwhile, Omaha Skutt Catholic came in second place, and Duchesne came in third.
