Koch Family Tennis Center renovations underway
July has been designated as Park and Recreation Month in the U.S. by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The USTA and NRPA announced a partnership to support healthier communities, which is in line with the USTA’s recently adopted mission statement. To celebrate this collaboration and Park and Recreation Month USTA Nebraska is featuring Koch Family Tennis Center, which is undergoing renovations.
Omaha’s Koch Family Tennis Center is one of the top tennis facilities within USTA Nebraska, hosting boys’ and girls’ state tennis tournaments at its sprawling campus in addition to numerous USTA leagues and tournaments.
However, Nebraska state high school tournaments were recently moved to Lincoln because of the aging courts at Koch. The City of Omaha and the Omaha Tennis Association—a nonprofit USTA Community Tennis Association (CTA)—made a commitment to restore the courts, and the makeover has begun.
“Koch is a national award-winning facility. It is so exciting to bring it back to life,” said Lisa Thomas, USTA Nebraska executive director. “The beautiful park-like setting and the way the courts are spaced out gives it a unique feel. Omaha will be able to bid on sectional and national tournaments once again.”
Reconstruction on Koch’s courts started in June. Courts 1 and 2 will be renovated, and a new court will be next to these courts to create a bank of three. The goal is to eventually build some seating into the hill that leads to these courts.
“It has been a collective effort to finally get this project underway,” Thomas said. “We have passionate tennis players, and we are glad the city is making this happen with and for the Nebraska tennis community. Koch will benefit not just Omaha, but all of the USTA Missouri Valley.”
Construction is expected to be finished this fall. Koch Family Tennis Center consists of 28 outdoor hard courts featuring 22 regulation courts, six of which are lit.
