Have you always wanted to officiate a USTA tennis match but not sure where to start? The Lincoln Tennis Association is hosting a free event for anyone interested in becoming an official. It will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Monday, March 23 at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, 401 S. 33rd. St. Dinner will be provided.

“Lincoln is very close to not being able to host tournaments without the recruitment and training of more officials,” said Kevin Heim, executive director at Woods Tennis Center.

Officials are responsible for making sure the competition is fair and under the USTA regulations. They supervise all aspects of play including the contact of everyone in the competition; players, coaches, parents, spectators, officials and administrative crew. It’s a crucial role in USTA tournaments.

Heim said anyone can officiate, regardless of age, and the more people who become officials means more tournaments can be held at courts across the state.

“The more officials we have, the less everyone officiates and more people can play,” he added.

During the session, interested candidates will be walked through the online training process, as well as providing answers to any questions participants may have. Please bring a laptop, iPad or notebook to take notes during the course of the session.

If you are interested in becoming an official and attending this session, please contact Kara Heim at heim@movalley.usta.com to get a headcount for dinner.

If you are interested and this time does not work for you, contact Kevin Heim at 402-617-6992 or Kara Heim at 913-967-9452 to set up an individualized time.
