Stanley family gives back to tennis through volunteering
In observance of February’s Black History Month, USTA Nebraska is recognizing the Stanley family of Omaha.
More than 20 years ago the Stanley family moved to Omaha from Birmingham, Alabama. They picked a house in the Gifford Park neighborhood and immediately got involved in the Gifford Park Tennis program, which offers free lessons on Wednesdays in August. They have not missed a week since they started in 2002, excluding the Covid year.
Parents Wendell and Alyssa Stanley have five daughters and one son; Dawn, Crystal, Justine, Witney, Rachel and Wendell Jr.
“Tennis is incredibly fun for us, and it’s a wonderful source of exercise,” said Dawn Stanley. “What we love most about tennis is there’s no age limit. We’ve played with people ranging from toddlers to folks in their nineties.”
Chris Foster is in charge of the Gifford Park Tennis program and said the Stanleys are a great example of giving back to the community they live in and the positive impact of tennis on their family.
“The Stanley family has been and continues to be the ‘heart and soul’ of our Gifford Park youth summer tennis program as well as most of our Gifford Park Neighborhood events and activities,” Foster said. “With the Stanley family you won’t find a more hard-working, giving, community-minded, and humble family.”
Although most of the siblings are grown now, they still give back to the program as volunteer coaches who work with the new kids in the program. Dawn believes it’s important to give back early in life, as often as you can.
“You're not only helping shape the community, but you are truly connecting with the incredible people that live around us,” she said. “I think we are our happiest when we are generous. We absolutely love that look that a child gets in their eye when they are finally able to hit a ball. I will always give tennis lessons because I know how much it meant to me as a child.”
Chris Foster and his sister started the Gifford Park Youth Tennis Program in 1994. To read more about it, click on this link.
