UNL Tennis on Campus Finishes Season Strong

Andrea Gallagher | March 30, 2020

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln club tennis team recently wrapped up its 2019-2020 season. The team placed ninth out of sixteen teams at the USTA Missouri Valley Tennis on Campus Section Championship in Des Moines March 7-8.

Even though the team didn’t advance to the national championship tournament, team captain Ashley Tyler said the team had great chemistry.

“We all get along very well and just like to have fun!” Tyler said. “We are all there to be social, yet competitive. For a lot of the team, it is part of their social/stress-free time for the week so it creates a great atmosphere.”

Tyler is a junior from Omaha studying Accounting and Finance. She played tennis in high school and joined the club to stay active and continue to play tennis. She said the team has 40-50 members and typically practices 2-3 times per week and travels 6-8 times per year. Members can be as dedicated as they want to be, since everybody has different schedules.

“My favorite part of the team is all the friendships I have made,” she added. “It’s a great way to have friends all around campus and you get to know each other really well by going to tournaments together. I cherish a lot of the memories made.”

Tennis on Campus is a way to play tennis competitively without the demands of being a NCAA student-athlete. With 35,000 students participating on more than 600 college campuses across the nation, Tennis on Campus is a fun, co-ed format designed to accommodate all levels of play, with top teams competing for regional and national championships. The Tennis on Campus program helps young adults stay connected to the sport and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle throughout their collegiate journey.
