UNState Offers High School Players Second Opportunity
Another opportunity, this time in Eastern Nebraska, is available for high school girls who missed the spring 2020 tennis season because of COVID-19. 2020 Girls UNState will be a one-day event on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln for girls to be able to play one last time together against other high school teams.
“I think there were a number of organizers and coaches across the state that were interested in creating an event as a way to allow players, and seniors especially the opportunity to play together one more time,” said Talor Wain, head tennis pro at Woods Tennis Center. “We were in the lucky position where we had the courts and resources to take an idea and try and make it a reality.”
Each team will have at least five players with two doubles matches and one singles match in a round robin format. The winner of two out of the three matches will win the dual. Coaches throughout the state have been notified and are encouraged to form teams, with seniors having first priority.
“With everything that has changed over the last few months across the world, sometimes even a slight return to normal can be important,” Wain added. “While there is nothing we can do to replace what has been lost, we are hoping that at least for one day we can bring back some of the enjoyment, teamwork and atmosphere that everyone missed out on.”
The event will follow all safety and health guidelines related to COVID-19. It’s also NSAA compliant. The deadline to sign up is July 25, 2020. If interested or have any questions, contact Kara Heim at heim@movalley.usta.com
