The United States Tennis Association today announced its No-Cut Coach All-Star Team. Local high school coach Matt Wiemers of McCook High School in McCook, Neb., has been selected as a member of the team which recognizes exceptional high school coaches who implement an inclusive “no-cut” policy for their high school tennis team. Since 2013, the USTA has recognized coaches nationwide for their dedication and leadership in providing young players with the experience of representing their school.

For the past 19 years, Matt Wiemers has been the head coach for the McCook High School tennis teams. His teams average 25 boys and 30 girls which represents 15 percent of McCook High School’s student body. During his tenure, Wiemers has amassed a 146-58 record for his girls’ teams and a 131-67 record for his boys’ teams. In 2017, the McCook High School tennis team won its first state championship in school history

Currently, Wiemers serves on the board of directors of the Nebraska Coaches Association. He has received many awards, including the 2010 Nebraska Tennis Association Junior Team Tennis Organizer of the Year, the Nebraska Coaches Association Coach of the Year (2013 and 2017), the2011 USTA Starfish Award, and the 2017 Hometown Hero award.

Additionally, each summer Wiemers hosts a summer tennis program for all ages to be introduced the sport, in which more than 100 players participate annually. He encourages his teams to support local Head Start students and YMCA youth programs to inspire young children to play tennis.

“By providing more students the opportunity to play and represent their high school, No-Cut Coaches provide their players with a lasting impression of inclusion and what it truly means to be part of a team,” said Elliott Pettit, Director, USTA School Tennis. “We are proud to honor their contributions as these coaches play such a critical role in their players’ high school experience and in turn, in the future health of our sport.”

Since 2006, more than 4,000 tennis coaches nationwide have made a commitment to offering a no-cut policy, with some programs including more than 100 team members on a high school team. The coaches of these teams make a difference by spending the extra time and effort to ensure that players experience the fun and fulfillment of playing tennis and participating in a school sport.

Coaches are nominated by their respective USTA section. To qualify for the USTA No-Cut All-Star Team, coaches must be currently implementing a no-cut policy on their teams, and be currently registered with the USTA as a “no-cut” coach. Additionally, each candidate must have at least five years of experience coaching tennis.

This year’s USTA No-Cut Coach All-Star Team includes the following coaches:

• Terri Bentley - Winter Park High School, Winter Park, Fla.

• Stacy Bryan - Abilene High School, Abilene, Texas
