A Guide to What to Include in Your Tennis Bag

Aaron Marchitti | June 28, 2021

As we head into the summer, students will be playing more tournaments, so here is a list of what can come in handy to have in your tennis bag.

When competing in tournaments your USTA Membership card should be on hand whether that be the physical card or a digital one.  Be sure to know your log in info so you can access it when you need it.

You can never have enough racquets, even if they are old ones. It is better to be prepared. That being said, have extra string along with your racquet -  it can save you in the long run. The stress of having to get your racquet restrung before a match is too much already.  You wouldn't want to travel all the way to a tournament just to find out that the facility doesn't carry the string you play with. Be prepared and bring backup string.

Along with your string, an extra over grip or two would be handy. Hats/Visors can be a necessity to blocking the sun from your eyes and help you cool off when you have a break. Speaking of the sun, make sure to pack sunscreen!  Getting a sunburn is no fun, especially when you are playing a match.

Healthy eating has its benefits, and it's important to have a healthy snack when playing.  Along with a snack, a drink -  whether it be water or a sports drink -  is a must during a match.

While keeping your diet in check, physical well-being is something to keep an eye on as well. Pack a first aid kit or at least some bandages. Some tennis facilities might not have one or a tournament might not have a trainer on hand.

Extra tennis shoes/shoelaces are important, especially for those of you who have had your pair for a while. Shoes can always give out when you least expect it.

After your match, it's good to relax as best you can so bring a towel with you to wipe away all the sweat and dirt you collect.  Plus, if the facility where you’re playing has a shower, it'll come in handy.  Adding an extra change of clothes to your bag is great to have, not only can you get out of your sweaty ones, but so you have more comfortable clothes to chill in while waiting for your next match.  And what is a change of comfortable clothing if you don't have a pair of flip flops/slides to go with!

With all that, a journal or something to write on can be a big help in the future. Have it with you so you write while it’s fresh on your mind. Write down what you did well in your matches and what you need to work on for your next tournament.

You are now set!  Good luck at your next tournament!
