Herrick, Weaver Earn Player of the Month Awards

Casey McKenzie | July 23, 2021

Two Oklahoma players received recognition from USTA Missouri Valley during the month of June.  Rebekah Herrick received the USTA Missouri Valley League Sportsmanship Award and John Weaver received the USTA Missouri Valley Mixed Player of the Month Award.

Rebekah Herrick from Tulsa received the USTA Missouri Valley Adult League sportsmanship award nomination from fellow USTA Oklahoma league player Trista Huntly.

Huntly had many kind words about Rebekah Herrick, “my partner and I had a pretty large lead in the first set and Rebekah’s demeanor remained the same even though they were down. She continued to be respectful and kind. She and her partner ultimately wound up beating us in the end. They were great competitors.”

Huntly has seen Herrick a few times in passing and says, “she is just as kind each time. I respect a great player with skills...but I respect even more a player with great skills and a tremendous attitude towards others. She’s a great sport.”

Herrick started playing tennis off and on when she was a teenager.  This spring and summer season she is on about a half dozen USTA Adult League teams.

“I really enjoy the camaraderie of being on a team and playing doubles,” she said, “Since it is both a very cerebral and physical game it forces you to take a break from the rest of your life while you play.”

Herrick was surprised by this award and a little humbled.  She said, “I hope awards like this help everyone to be more mindful of their behavior while on the court. At my level, tennis is just for fun.  And although I like to win, in the long run it is more fun if you keep your match in perspective.”

USTA Missouri Valley Mixed Player of the Month, John Weaver, has been playing tennis since he was 12-years-old.  The Edmond resident took a 27-year tennis hiatus but after missing the competition and camaraderie he decided it was time to pick up the racquet again.

“After 27 years of not playing tennis, coming back and playing competitively has been more fun and challenging than I could’ve imagined,” Weaver Said.  “It took much longer than a year to receive any type of award or acknowledgement the first round of tennis 27 years ago so I’m very thankful for the recognition!”

Herrick and Weaver each receive a USTA swag box and $30 credit toward their next League registration. Sincere congratulations from USTA Oklahoma to these two deserving players from Oklahoma!
