October Spotlight of the Month - NJTL

Casey McKenzie | November 04, 2021

Each month, USTA Oklahoma will highlight a player, a volunteer and a NJTL (National Junior Tennis & Learning) or Adaptive Tennis Player.  After selecting the three winners, USTA Oklahoma sits down for Q & A with the spotlight of the month.

  • Athlete: Any player that has good sportsmanship & dedication to the sport, whether they are just starting out in a Team Challenge or they are a nationally-ranked player. USTA Oklahoma would love to hear recommendations from your team or facility. Click here to see the October Athlete Spotlight.

  • Volunteer: A person that has gone above and beyond for your facility or program. Click here to see the October Volunteer Spotlight.

  • NJTL/Adaptive Player: A player that has demonstrated hard work and dedication in their program.

The October NJTL Player of the Month Spotlight:

Sean Wu

Where do you play? I play at First Serve OKC at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Favorite tennis memory? On the court, hitting a clean winner reverse backhand (facing the fence) after getting lobbed at the net in a match. Off the court, winning the National NJTL essay contest.

Where are you from? My family is originally from Taiwan, but we have been living in Oklahoma City since 2009.

How long have you been playing? I have been playing for five years with First Serve OKC.

Favorite athlete? I play a lot of video games and if you count esports professionals athletes, I would say Lee "Faker" Sang-Hyeok would be my favorite.

Who is your tennis coach? I have been coached by all of the different coaches and volunteers at First Serve OKC (Tony, Emmy, Lane, Steve, Trey, Ty, Tri, and many others).

What is your pre-match ritual or pre-match meal? I don't really do anything special before a match. I just try to sleep well the night before, eat a good breakfast, and hope for the best.

What racquet do you use? I use a Wilson Blade v6.

Forehand or backhand? I like whatever goes into the court better on any given day (forehands feel better but are slightly more inconsistent than by backhands) but lean slightly more to forehands.

Favorite sport, besides tennis? I don't go out of my way to watch nor play other sports generally, but basketball is pretty fast-paced and fun (but I prefer esports as previously mentioned).
