Q&A with Oklahoma City Tennis Center Facility Director Steve Henry

Casey McKenzie | April 20, 2021

The Oklahoma City Tennis Center was built in 1969 and has continually made impactful updates to the facility.  In 2020, a new 2.1-million-dollar pro shop was added. The new pro shop connects to the indoor tennis building providing viewing into the indoor courts, restrooms, offices, and a new and larger pro shop. The Tennis Center is part of the Oklahoma City Public Parks and Recreation Division and is located in Will Rogers Park.  Hosting over 60 tournaments per year, leagues, lessons, drills, Cardio tennis and much more, it is exciting to see this extraordinary add-on to the award-winning public facility.

USTA Oklahoma: Is the facility fully complete or are there additional phases to be added?

Henry: Mostly completed. We will be increasing the size of our viewing area to our indoor courts in a few weeks by removing an unused office space.

USTA Oklahoma: Is OKC Tennis Center open to the public?

Henry: Yes! As always.

USTA Oklahoma: What is included in the new facility? How big, how many courts?

Henry: This project was only an indoor pro shop. This includes a viewing area into the indoor courts, offices, a new retail space and an outdoor back patio area overlooking courts three and four.  It is approximately 7,000 sq. ft.

USTA Oklahoma: What are a few of your favorite things about the new place?

Henry: The viewing space into the indoor court, and the back patio area. These are two really nice spaces.

USTA Oklahoma: What will you be using the old clubhouse for?

Henry: This will be a shared space. During the week this will be a learning center for our NJTL, First Serve. On weekends of some of our major outdoor tournaments, this will be a players lounge area.

USTA Oklahoma: What are some big events that will be happening at your facility?

Henry: We will be hosting the Boys and Girls High School State Championships in May, a USTA Missouri Valley junior L3 event for all age groups in June and in October we have three consecutive weekends of USTA Missouri Valley Sectional Championships.
