September Spotlight of the Month: Volunteer

Casey McKenzie | September 23, 2022

Each month, USTA Oklahoma will highlight a player, a volunteer, and a NJTL (National Junior Tennis & Learning) or Adaptive Tennis Player. After selecting the 3 winners, we will sit down for a Q & A with the spotlight of the month.

  • Athlete-- Any player that has good sportsmanship & dedication to the sport, whether they are just starting out in a Team Challenge or they are a National ranked player we would love to hear who you would recommend from your team or facility
  • Volunteer--A person that has gone above and beyond for your facility or program.
  • NJTL/Adaptive Player--A player that has demonstrated hard work and dedication they have put forth in their program.

Where do you volunteer?

I volunteer in fund development for LaFortune Park Tennis in Tulsa.

What organization(s) do you volunteer for?

Besides LaFortune Park Tennis, I also volunteer with my church, Redeemer Church, and I serve my neighborhood as President of the homeowners’ association.

How long have you been volunteering at this organization?

About three years.

Do you play tennis?

Yes, but not well.  I do, however, have good teammates.  I am the captain of two USTA teams that qualified for Nationals this year.

Favorite tennis memory?

There are so many fun memories and it is so hard to choose!  I guess my favorite so far was when my 65+ team won Sectionals. This is a new team this year and I had no idea how good we were so it was great to win. I knew my 55+ team was good so it wasn’t as much of a surprise.

One of the best laughs I’ve had on a tennis court was with my daughter at LaJolla Beach and Tennis Club with the LaFortune women last year.  The pro was feeding mile high balls for overheads and my daughter, Jennifer McPhail, and I were waiting to return them.  After about 20 misses in a row, a player caught the ball in the racquet frame.  We couldn’t stop laughing.

Where are you from?

Tulsa

How long have you been playing tennis?

I took up tennis after I retired.  That was seven years ago.

Favorite athlete?

It is too hard to choose a favorite but Roger Federer was a beautiful player to watch.

Who is your tennis coach?

I just started playing at LaFortune when Tim Leos joined the staff.  I drill with Tim twice a week.   If I would only do what he tells me, I could be a pretty good player. LaFortune has lots of good teaching pros including Melissa McCorkle.

What is your pre-match ritual or pre-match meal?

I don’t have either.  Maybe that’s my problem.

What racquet do you use?

Wilson something or other

Forehand or backhand?

I have both, more or less.

Favorite sport, besides tennis?

I like lots of sports but if I had to choose something besides tennis, it would be soccer.

Favorite food?

Too hard to narrow it down unless wine counts.
