Wedemeyer Grows The Game
To honor their 100th anniversary in 2020, the USTA Missouri Valley is recognizing 100 deserving recipients with the Gold Star Award. This award recognizes contributions that recipients have made in growing the game of tennis in their community.
Wedemeyer is a local tennis pro and junior coach running programming out of Oaktree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma. After Wedemeyer was selected for a Gold Star award, we had a Q&A with him about his tennis journey. Read more about Wedemeyer below:
USTA.com: How did your tennis journey begin?
Wedemeyer: We were vacationing in Florida one summer when I was 8 years old. Our family (all seven of us) took a group tennis lesson for fun. My mother and I were the only ones that became interested in the sport after that.
USTA.com: What got you into coaching?
Wedemeyer: After I finished at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Pancho Walthall gave me an opportunity to work at Southern Hills Country Club where I was drawn to working with the competitive kids and traveling with them. I was addicted to it and from there I began a tennis career!
USTA.com: What do you like about coaching?
Wedemeyer: I enjoy seeing progress. Developing kids and adults is very rewarding. Another thing I like is that every day is different. I enjoy the process.
USTA.com: What do you like about working with Oaktree?
Wedemeyer: Oak Tree is a beautiful, family oriented country club. We have a great facility here. I also love my staff! I look forward to the camaraderie and working on and off the court with them.
USTA.com: What motivates you to grow the game of tennis?
Wedemeyer: I really enjoy the process! Watching kids that we helped enter into Smashers tournaments and then see them develop into sectional tournament players is very rewarding.
USTA.com: What are your thoughts on receiving a USTA Missouri Valley Gold Star award?
Wedemeyer: I am very, very humbled to be thought of. Thank you very much.
Gold Star Award recipients will receive personal items to keep, a plaque and a special gift. Congratulations to all who the USTA Missouri Valley has chosen for the Gold Star Award.
