2020 Leagues Updates

Jamie Hansen | September 22, 2020

The lion’s share of the 2020 USTA St. Louis league season culminated in district tournament play in August with a different twist than in years prior. The tournament was held on separate weekends for men and women – and was held outdoors.

Due to COVID-19, teams taking home district titles do not advance to sectionals or nationals as those tournaments have been cancelled.

Despite those cancellations, Adult League Coordinator Jill Kunkel said the tournaments for both the men and the women were competitive and fun.

“It went really well,” Kunkel said. We had to split up the women’s and men’s tournaments due to court availability, which we hated to do. However, the tournament was super positive. Everyone was excited to be playing again.”

In addition to the traditional adult leagues in 2020, an outdoor Mixed Tri-level league was added to the fold. That league still has some weeks remaining on the schedule. Kunkel said the league was essentially put together overnight because of the drive and determination of Sam Shouldis.

“Sam is a captain in several of our leagues and said he could get teams together for this league. He really worked hard to get this league off the ground.”

USTA leagues for 2021 are now in full swing. Kunkel said the number of teams is down slightly, but the number of players has increased. She is receiving inquiries from people who had stepped away from the game for a long while who are now ready to get back into it.

“We have so much interest in tennis right now,” Kunkel said. “They want to know how to get involved and it’s very exciting since tennis is considered a safe sport.”
