Dominant Duo Tournaments Return This Summer
Junior players: grab a friend — the time is drawing near for Dominant Duo tournaments!
Three Dominant Duo format tournaments will take place in the St. Louis area in 2020. The action starts June 11-12, with matches held primarily at Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
According to Carobeth Kelly, Junior Tennis Coordinator, Dominant Duo tournaments offer up the best parts of playing tennis — playing with friends and as part of a team.
“Players seem to love the format because they sign up with a friend and get to play doubles and singles every round,” Kelly said. “Parents seem to love the format because their child gets to play a lot of tennis.”
Here is how Dominant Duo tennis works: two players enter the tournament together, with teams selected based on their combined rankings. Team matches are played, consisting of a doubles pro-set against the opposing team, as well as a singles match between the number one players and number two players from each team. Whichever team wins two or more of the match-ups wins the match. That team then moves forward in the draw.
The tournament uses a Compass Draw, which is a non-elimination format. Every team plays every round. The teams progress through the compass based upon their results. But there is something in it for individual players, too, with each entrant earning tournament points based on their individual results in doubles and singles. These points are tallied regardless of their team’s results in matches.
Three of these Dominant Duo events are on the docket for 2020, kicking things off with Level 5 June 12-14 for boys and girls aged 12-18. Level 4 is next up July 11-12 for boys and girls 12-18. The limit of teams for Levels 4 and 5 is eight. Sept. 12-13, Level 3 rounds out the series for boys and girls aged 14.
