John Burroughs, Ladue, Clayton Capture Girls’ Tennis State Titles

The Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield again hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Girls’ Tennis State Championships in mid- and late October. Teams and individuals from around Missouri competed in MSHSAA’s three classes to determine state titlists. Check out our roundup of the action below!

 

Class 3

 

John Burroughs School defeated Liberty by a 5-1 margin to capture the Class 3 state championship. The Bombers beat Cor Jesu Academy and Lafayette by matching 5-0 results en route to the final. Lafayette collected a third-place finish.

 

In Class 3 singles, Lafayette's Amber Yin claimed the title without dropping a set. She defeated North Kansas City's Sydney Fuger in the final. Sahana Madala of John Burroughs reached the semifinals. Elena Davis of Cor Jesu made it to the quarterfinals. Kirkwood’s Hadley Allaria, Lafayette’s Madison Pfeiffer and Visitation Academy’s Flora Eidson fell in the Round of 16.

In doubles play, Alice Kennedy/Ashley Behan of St. Joseph’s Academy claimed the state championship with a victory over Allison Wayne/Eva Kasal of John Burroughs. Lindbergh’s Kate Davidson/Gabrielle Daniels reached the quarters, as did Mia Yin/Mary Sublette of Lafayette. Francis Howell Central’s Ava Sheehan/Adelaide Johnson and Cor Jesu’s Angelina Hong/Katherine Cooper qualified for the Round of 16.

 

Class 2

 

Ladue High School rolled through the competition to collect the MSHSAA Class 2 state title. Ladue bested Fort Zumwalt South, Webster Groves and Grain Valley on its way to the championship. Webster Groves picked up a third-place finish in Class 2 team action.

 

In the singles draw, Rachel Li of MICDS defeated Angela Chen of Ladue in three sets to earn the state championship. Mehlville’s Stefanie Wong made a run to the semifinals. Holt’s Jennifer Nelson, Washington’s Evelyn Bryson and St. Pius X’s Carolyne Argana qualified for the Round of 16.

 

In the Class 2 doubles draw, Parkway North’s Yvonne Shannon/Emily Koo didn’t drop a set en route to winning the state title. They beat Villa Duchesne’s Alexandra Todorovich/Katherine Todorovich in the final.

 

St Pius X’s Chloe Kronlage/Brooke Madden, Nerinx Hall’s Sophia McGhee/Sarah Ehlers, Holt’s Amber Hutcherson/Lauren Hutcherson, Webster Groves’s Addison Simpson/Margaret Anne Nakatani and Fort Zumwalt South’s Bridget Herweck/Allyson Lam lost doubles matches in the Round of 16.

 

Class 1

 

Clayton defeated Duchesne, Father Tolton Catholic, Ursuline Academy and St. Michael the Archangel on its path to the Class 1 state championship. Ursuline earned a third-place finish with a 5-1 victory over Savannah. North County and Metro made it to the Round of 16.

 

In Class 1 singles, Clayton’s Aanya Singh collected a second-place finish, as she fell to Lincoln College Prep’s Leiloni Payton. Ursuline’s Emelia Kinder reached the semifinals while Ursuline’s Meredith Goff made the Round of 16. North County’s Lucy Pace and Clayton’s Julia Cramer also reached the Round of 16.

 

In doubles action, Clayton’s Riley Reeves/Riley Zimmerman advanced to the semifinals. Clayton’s Simone Sah/Katherine Nguyen and Ursuline’s Alayna Quigley/Suzie Hanley progressed to the quarterfinals. Ursuline’s Vivian Jones/Joie King and Lutheran St. Charles’s Abigail Cristea/Hadleigh Todd fell in the Round of 16.
