USTA St. Louis Ready to Host USTA League Section Championships
USTA St. Louis is set to host the opening weekend of the 2023 USTA Missouri Valley League Section Championships on August 4-6 at Dwight Davis Tennis Center and Westminster Christian Academy.
Teams competing at the 18+ 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 levels as well as 55+ squads at the 7.0 and 9.0 levels will battle in St. Louis with berths to the USTA League National Championships on the line. Severine Huchet, USTA St. Louis adult league coordinator, is looking forward to the top teams in USTA Missouri Valley descending upon St. Louis.
“I’m very excited to welcome players from all over the section for another great event over three days,” Huchet said. “Teams are always fired up when they play two matches every day in 100 degrees. It’s always good competition. People are excited to be here and thankful to be playing tennis in a great facility.”
Huchet noted Dwight Davis and Westminster are terrific facilities to both play and watch tennis. With the 18-court Dwight Davis facility receiving some upgrades last year and the 12-court Westminster facility regarded as one of the premier tennis venues in the area, participating teams will be in for a great experience.
“We have shade on every court at Dwight. We have bleachers with a lot of shade between Courts 14 and 15, allowing views. We have a great viewing area from the deck with shade,” Huchet said. “We also have an under-the-stadium area that has been completely redone with fans and tables facing Courts 11 and 12. That’s where we host our lunch. You really don’t have many bad spots to watch matches at Dwight.
“Westminster also has bleachers for spectators everywhere. Dwight and Westminster are both good locations as far as quality of courts, and that’s important to the players.”
In case of inclement weather, the district has several indoor facilities lined up. Huchet said USTA St. Louis is grateful to have the support of high-quality indoor alternatives. And to help combat the potentially hot conditions the district will provide players Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, a well-known St. Louis staple.
Huchet encouraged individuals and teams not partaking in Section Championship action to come watch the high-caliber tennis that will be on display.
“We have the 5.0 men and 5.0 women this year — those are the best players in St. Louis and a lot of them are tennis pros,” Huchet said. “They always attract a good crowd. We also play against the best players, 5.0s of Kansas City and Nebraska. It is great tennis at a higher level you don’t get to see very often.
“You also want to see how the team that beat you is doing when they get challenged by stronger teams from other parts of the section. That’s always interesting. There are players not competing in sectionals who come watch those matches. It’s always good to see them. They just enjoy watching tennis. It’s fun.”
