USTA funding helps Westminster Christian Academy upgrade 12 tennis courts
When you drive onto the campus of Westminster Christian Academy in Town and Country in west St. Louis County, you’ll notice top-notch facilities. It’s a very purposeful way to attract future students.
“Who knows: as they drive onto our beautiful campus, they may think, ‘I didn’t know there was a school here,’” said Mike Cluley, director of facilities for Westminster. “It could offer a little bit of advertisement for them to potentially want to send their children here.”
With that approach in mind, Westminster is resurfacing all 12 tennis courts on campus with the project expected to wrap up in August. Cluley said it had been nine years since the last resurfacing, and the normal shelf life on resurfacing is six or seven years.
“With the tennis courts specifically — since they are open for anybody to use, even outside of our community — we love the opportunity to be able to give back to the community that has been so gracious to us,” Cluley said. “Even if it’s a small way of opening up our 12 tennis courts to the community and the public around us, we love the ability to be able to do that.”
Community Investment
Plenty of people visit the campus on a regular basis, especially during the summer months, to use the tennis courts. Westminster hosts camps and clinics for kids in the neighborhood in addition to having powerhouse boys’ and girls’ high school tennis teams. The school is also heavily invested in USTA events, frequently hosting leagues and tournaments.
Westminster received $59,000 in Tennis Venue Services funding from USTA National for the resurfacing. The school also received $6,000 in TVS funding from the USTA Missouri Valley.
The USTA’s total contribution covered about half of the project’s budget. Westminster tapped into a devoted support system for the remainder of the cost.
The Westminster Christian Academy tennis courts have been a key hub for USTA events, including league play and tournaments.

“We’re grateful for the amount of money that has been coming in through donations, not only from our community here but also from the USTA,” Cluley said. “We would not be able to do this without the general funding and generous donation from the USTA to help cover some of the cost of resurfacing our courts.”
It’s not like the well-utilized courts were in terrible condition prior to the resurfacing. There was some cracking on the surface on the edges of the courts and around the support poles. Some of the poles had to be straightened before the resurfacing could be completed.
The company doing the resurfacing, Australian Courtworks, is the same company that originally put the courts in back in 2011. Westminster went through a bid process, and Australian Courtworks came up with the best offer.
Purpose Beyond Play
Six of the courts have blended lines, more easily allowing for youth tennis activities. It’s all done with the community in mind.
“I have fresh eyes into this place because I’ve only been here for one year,” Cluley said. “What I have noticed is the environment in this building and with these teachers and coaches is second to none. They really pour themselves into education, into the training of the students, coaching them. The coaching even goes beyond sports. They’re giving life advice in a sense.
“It’s really great that we have the opportunity to pour into children’s lives and help them leave Westminster Christian Academy and be successful young adults — whether that’s going in the military or going to college or trade school, whatever they choose to do.”
