USTA Missouri Valley in the US Open
The USTA Missouri Valley was represented well in the 2020 US Open with former USTA Missouri Valley juniors Madison Keys (of Rock Island, Ill.), Casey Ratzlaff (of Wichita, Kan.), Jack Sock (of Lincoln, Neb. and Kansas City, Kan.), and Jackson Withrow (of Omaha, Neb.) all competing in the tournament.
Keys advanced to the third round of the tournament, taking down Timea Babos of Hungary in a 6-1, 6-1 first-round defeat and besting Aliona Bolsova of Spain in a deciding 6-2, 6-1 victory, but eventually retiring due to injury against French Alizé Cornet in a 7-6(4), 3-2 RET. loss at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sock also made it out of the first round in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(2) redemption victory over Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas who had previously defeated Sock in the 2019 US Open. He would fall in the second round to French Adrian Mannarino with a final score of 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-2.
In the doubles tournament, Sock reunited with a fellow former Nebraska junior in Withrow. The pair took down Aisam-ul-Haq Quereshi and Dominic Inglot in an exciting 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 7-6(5) victory. They would then take on Soares and Pavić but fall in a 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4 final score.
Next, Ratzlaff would take the court for his first ever US Open appearance. Ratzlaff would fall in a tough-fought match against Joachim Gerard of Belgium, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Following the match, Ratzlaff got the chance to be in the spotlight in an interview with Victoria Chiesa of USOpen.org:
"I did well for most of the match, I felt, and I was very happy with how I played for most of the match. I did what I wanted to do: I played hard, pushed hard, got balls back, represented myself well and showed effort and passion. It was good, and there are a lot of positives I can take from it... I was just very happy to push him and make him fight. I showed so much effort out there, and for my first match at a Slam, I couldn't feel better about it."
Ratzlaff would later take the court with Gerard, this time as doubles partners, in a 6-2, 6-1 semifinal loss to Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer of France.
The USTA Missouri Valley is proud of all these notable players have accomplished and we look forward to watching them on the world stage in future events.
