Wash. U Defends Tennis On Campus Section Championship Title

It was a wonderful weekend of tennis (March 4-5) in Springfield, Mo. as 16 college club tennis teams from across USTA Missouri Valley competed at the 2023 USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Section Championship.

Teams were battling for a top-3 finish, and the opportunity to advance to next month's 2023 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship (April 6-8) at the Surprise Tennis Center in Surprise, AZ. After two full days of tennis, the three schools who earned advancement to TOC Nationals are Washington University (St. Louis), University of Iowa, and University of Kansas.

In a rematch of last year's finals, Wash U. and Iowa battled back and forth with Wash U. emerging victorious once again with a 25-23 win. On the adjacent courts, it was another rematch of last year's 3rd/4th place match between Kansas and Iowa State. This match determined the third and final team to advance to Nationals, and this year it was the Jayhawks who came out on top.

All captains and players received gifts for attending, and the 1st-5th place teams received prizes for their efforts. In addition, our USTA Missouri Valley Adult League department provided gifts for TOC players who stopped by our adult league booth to discuss 'Tennis Off Campus', and homemade cupcakes were provided to ALL players and staff by Laura and Mark Jager!

A huge THANK YOU definitely goes out to the entire staff at Cooper Tennis Complex for their assistance to make this unique event a success. Special thanks to Mallory Weber, Ben Byrd (Cooper Complex), Steve Webb, and John Xu (tournament officials) for going above & beyond, and for being such gracious hosts. Their efforts were amazing and greatly appreciated. HyVee also donated cases of water for our players. Thank you HyVee!
