Champions were crowned in thrilling matches this weekend at the USTA League Adult 55 & Over 6.0 National Championships, held at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona.

The Northern section team, from St. Paul, Minn., scored a narrow 2-1 decision over the Northern California section team, from Oakland, Calif., to win the men’s championship.

“It was wonderful. This last match was a flip of the coin,” said Northern Section team captain Eric Narvaez. “It was really hard, but nobody gave up. It was a tremendous effort.”

The Pacific Northwest section men’s team, from Tacoma, Wash., edged the Texas section squad, from Tyler, Texas, 2-1, to finish in third place.

The women’s championship featured a strong Florida section team, from Naples, Fla., which played nearly perfect tennis in the final, blanking the Pacific Northwest section team, from Seattle, 3-0.

“I have the world’s best team and the most wonderful ladies. Everybody loves each other on this team,” said Florida team captain Roanna Handy. “We all support one another. Everyone is willing to give up their position for the win and that’s what makes a great team.”

The women’s Caribbean section team, from Bayamon, P.R., finished in third place by defeating the Southern California section team, from La Quinta, Calif., 2-1.
