CTA Spotlight: Palmer Park Tennis Academy
Located in Detroit, the Palmer Park Tennis Academy serves over 100 local kids per year. It is part of the larger ‘People for Palmer Park’ organization that’s goal is to preserve and revitalize the park.
The academy was founded by Leonora King, a former collegiate tennis star who returned to the area to create and fill the need for a community based association. The academy is focused on using the sport as a tool to create a tennis centered community to rebuild Palmer Park and the City of Detroit.
When asked, Leonora described the program as, “The best thing I have ever done, it brings me such joy and a real sense of community”.
The Palmer Park Tennis Academy is a volunteer driven program that provides lessons for the children of Detroit, ages 5-15 years old. Tennis racquets and balls are provided.
In partnership with the USTA, the organization is a model for a community based program that is focused on growing the game and changing lives, one racquet at a time.
