High School Player Spotlight

We want to introduce you to Sydney Fuger. The USTA National High School committee would like to provide a player spotlight of high school players who not only excel at their sport but also make it a habit of giving back to the community and to others who would not normally be able to be involved in this great game.

Sydney grew up in the KC area playing juniors and continues to compete for her High School team.  While Sydney is not only an exceptional tennis player but also very importantly, she is a great person, too. Many of her peers she grew up playing junior tournaments with, do not always come back to play with their high school teams, feeling that it would impact their training negatively. Not Sydney, her team can always count on her.

Her parents are no strangers to the game either. Sydney’s mom, Amy, is also a solid tennis player and played college tennis. Amy’s dad was also a high school tennis coach, so the tennis roots run deep. Sydney’s mom relates how some of her best memories growing up were that of high school tennis. Sydney’s dad was also a multi-sport athlete and played high school tennis, as well. You can see where it was always understood that Sydney would follow in the footsteps of family and play high school tennis.

Over the last several years, Sydney has volunteered with the Stephanie Waterman Foundation, which is a local nonprofit in Kansas City that is run by Scott Hanover.  Amy is also on the foundation’s board.  The mission is to provide tennis training and opportunities to urban kids in KC.  Sydney has done fundraising and goes on the court to hit with kids, feed balls to the younger kids, etc.

Scott Hanover says, “The Foundation is thrilled to have high school-age volunteers like Sydney who make up our Junior Board. Our kids need to see other players their age engaged in our association.

We’re thrilled with the service Sydney has provided over the years.”

We are very grateful for high school players like Sydney, who give back to the game and help provide opportunities for others to experience this great sport we all love.
