Four Sections Crowned Champs at 40 & Over 4.5 Nationals

Gray skys and rain couldn’t dampen the excitement at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala., where during the weekend of Oct. 20 -22, the USTA crowned four new champions in the 40 & Over 4.5+ division.

The USTA Middle States Section from Sewell, N.J., and USTA Northern California Section from San Jose, Calif., shared the men's title, and the USTA Florida Section from Tampa, Fla., and USTA Southern Section from Louisville, Ky., each earned a piece of the women's title. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the championship matches, resulting in the co-champs.

To advance to the title match, the Sewell team defeated a team from Cicero, Ind., 4-1, in the semifinals and the San Jose team defeated a team from Portland, Ore., 4-1. Both teams advanced to the semifinal stage by winning their round-robin flights contested Friday and Saturday.

In women's action, the Louisville team defeated a squad from Oklahoma City, 3-2, in the semifinals and the Tampa team defeated a team from Rye, N.Y., 3-2. Both teams also advanced by winning their round-robin flights.
