USTA Midwest sweeps at USTA League 18 & Over 4.5 Nationals
It was a Midwest sweep at the 2017 USTA League National Adult 18 & Over 4.5 National Championships.
The USTA Midwest Section teams from Indianapolis (men) and Stow, Ohio (women) prevailed Sunday at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla.
Indianapolis secured its championship with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the USTA Mid-Atlantic squad from Washington, D.C., in the final, after defeating the Florida squad from Miami, 4-1, in the semifinals.
The team, which plays out of the Five Seasons Sports Club in Indianapolis, was captained by Josh Heeg and featured John Keele, Vijay Rao, Matt Cohen, Jose Hungria, Steven Pjevach, Nick Thompson, Benjamin Miller and Dan Albert.
Stow emerged as the women’s winner, outlasting the Eastern team from Mount Kisco, N.Y., 3-2, in the championship match. Midwest defeated the Florida squad from Altamonte Springs, 4-1, in the semifinals.
The Stow team was co-captained by Jodi Hanish and Melinda Koch and featured Maria Ciccolini, Erika Sullivan, Kathleen Ferry, Isabelle Rodau, Andrea Morris, Martha Adams, Irene Norman. Midwest plays out of the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
Because of rain that hampered the event, the third-place matches were not played. For the men, Miami and the Texas team from Houston split the third-place honors, while Altamonte Springs shared the bronze with the Missouri Valley team from Oklahoma City.
