United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum to open in Colorado Springs
The Tokyo Olympics—rescheduled for a July 23, 2021 start —are exactly one year out, but fans and admirers of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams won't have to wait that long to get a glimpse of the country's finest athletes in Red, White and Blue.
The United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum (USOPM) is set to open to the public on July 30, in downtown Colorado Springs—known as Olympic City USA, and the home of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center and the USOPC headquarters.
General admission tickets and memberships are now on sale on the USOPM website.
The 60,000-square-foot building will contain 12 galleries that tell the story and history of our Team USA athletes. Guests will have the ability to create a unique, personal tour based on their sport preferences and accessibility needs.
"The stories of our Olympians and Paralympians are the stories of this nation’s history,” museum CEO Christopher Liedel said in a press release. "Every American can see themselves in the members of Team USA and will be inspired by their dedication, perseverance and respect for the Olympic and Paralympic values. The museum has the unique privilege of telling these stories, and we are ready and excited to share them with the world."
The United States is the leader in Olympic tennis medals since the sport was reinstated as an Olympic medal event in 1988. The U.S. has won 14 Olympic gold medals, and a record 24 medals in total, in men’s and women’s tennis since that time.
Venus Williams, with five total Olympic medals, is tied for the all-time tennis medal record. Spanning from 2000-2016, she's won four gold medals (one in singles, three in women's doubles with Serena Williams) and one silver medal (mixed doubles). Serena Williams has four gold medals of her own—one in singles and three in women's doubles with Venus.
Team USA also won three tennis medals at the Rio 2016 games. Olympic debutants Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock won a gold medal in the mixed doubles competition, beating silver-medalists Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram in a three-set, all-American final. Sock, alongisde partner Steve Johnson, also won bronze in the men's doubles event.
The USOPM will provide a new showcase for these athletes and the rest of Team USA. For more information, visit the official museum website.
