USTA Tennis Venue Services helps dreams come true at Sportsmen’s

December 02, 2024

The award-winning Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester, Mass., recently celebrated the opening of a new four-court indoor facility, part of a larger capital campaign and expansion.

“Cutting the ribbon on this beautiful facility was the culmination of four and a half years of planning, negotiating, adjusting, regrouping and, of course, fundraising—and 'friend-raising,’” said STEC Executive Director and CEO Toni Wiley. “It’s our Board of Director’s reward for never losing faith in the vision, despite many obstacles. But it’s really the community's reward for trusting us with their kids, their dreams and their support for the past 63 years. We hope our partners are as proud of this moment as we are.”

The project, which was completed with support and guidance from USTA Tennis Venue Services, involved constructing a building to house four indoor courts in an area that had held four outdoor courts. The new building brings the total number of indoor courts at Sportsmen’s to 11, which will allow the venue—one of the largest NJTLs in the country, in addition to having adult members—to offer more free and subsidized play and implement a wider array of programs and tournaments.

“A TVS project manager was assigned to work directly with Sportsmen’s,” said Todd Carlson, Director of USTA Tennis Venue Services, Parks & CTAs. “We provided insight, information and resources—basically as another set of eyes to help lower their risk.

“Toni and a dedicated group of volunteers did so much work to make this happen—from fundraising, to getting approvals, to working with local governments, to working directly with contractors and subcontractors,” he added.

“And that’s one key in working with Tennis Venue Services: We can meet you where you’re at. If you’re just starting to think about building or renovating, or already have plans, or have engaged a contractor—wherever you are in the process, we can meet you there.”

Wiley says Sportsmen’s worked with TVS for “all kinds of things that, even with our committee of professionals, we wouldn’t have necessarily caught on to. The engineering support they provide is priceless. You can’t afford not to use TVS.”

She also says they “leaned heavily” on the Tennis Court: Construction & Maintenance Manual, produced by the USTA and the American Sports Builders Association. (The manual has recently been updated and the new 11th edition is now available at sportsbuilders.org.)

In addition to the 11 indoor courts, Sportsmen’s has three outdoor courts, which are slated to be expanded to four in the next phase of the overall $12 million capital campaign. Future construction also will connect the two indoor buildings and create the Bud Collins Tennis Welcome Center, which will include a 3,500-square-foot fi tness center, lounges, locker rooms and more classroom space.

“Sportsmen’s has a long history of making the impossible possible,” said USTA New England President Adam Molda at the ribbon cutting in September. “I believe the best part of being in the tennis industry is the impact you make on people’s lives through tennis. “There is no place that exemplifies this better than Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center.”
